Youth Leadership Council - About Us

Lindsey Wood

Hello, my name is Lindsey Wood. I'm currently going to WITC in Rice Lake for the Web Specialist certificate. I like to travel, listen to music, go to leadership conferences, design web sites and graphics for businesses, and hang out with my family and friends.

My mission for the YLC: to be a support to the youth with a transition plan to transition from high school to college. Being part of the YLC, I really enjoyed a lot.

Laura Spoerl

I am 21 years old, and live in Appleton, Wisconsin. I am hard-of-hearing, and I also have Autism. Currently I am attending UW-Oshkosh, majoring in Psychology and Music. My dream job would be one that utilizes both of these fields, hopefully as a Music Therapist. I currently work at my local Boys & Girls Club during the After-School Program, working and interacting with the kids that attend the Club. In my free time I love listening to or playing music, practicing yoga and dance, reading, and hanging out with my friends.

My passion and goal to help individuals with disabilities realize their greatest potential, and that they can indeed make a change.

Caroline Leung

I am 27 years old and live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have a learning disability. I graduated from UW-Whitewater with a degree in Organizational Communication and Multimedia.

I currently work as a Computer Analyst for Footlocker, Incorporated. I'm also a Coordinator for the Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) and a Facilitator for YiPPE (Youth in Partnership with Parents for Empowerment). I have also worked as a private tutor for a UW-Whitewater student. I am a member of the WSTI Youth Leadership Council and am a member of the planning committee for the Wisconsin Transition Conference.

Mike Tews

I am 18 years old and live in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. I am currently a freshman at UW-Whitewater, majoring in Journalism. I have Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. My hobbies are: watching sports, traveling, fishing, playing video games, collecting sports cards, and music.

I will utilize all my talents, abilities, and experiences to advocate and guide youth transitioning from high school to post secondary education or the workforce, as well as be a positive role model.

Jenny Gilles

I am 27 years old and graduated from Edgewood College with a B.S in Education Studies. I currently work at Communication Innovations as a reading and academic support specialist for clients pre-kindergarten through high school, with learning challenges. I also work part time a jewelry store and I am a member of the Youth Leadership Council. My greatest strength is connecting with hard to reach learners.

My goal is to help kids by giving them the tools necessary to succeed in school and life and most importantly believe in themselves as learners.

Patrick Young

I am a senior at Germantown High School. I am working on my own transition goals right now. I want to be able to take classes at a college and I would like to help be an advocate for others with special needs when I graduate from high school. My challenge and goal is to be a good advocate myself, even though I have a cognitive disability.

I enjoy making new friends, who are fun and energetic and are trying to influence our government representatives. I also want to be able to share MY experiences with government people to make changes to improve systems for people with special needs. This is a group that I can learn a lot of new things from.

I want to bring the perspective of people with cognitive disabilities to the Youth Leadership Council. I want to use my experiences to influence the government.

Chad Murphy-Price

I am 24 years old and live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I live with Cerebral Palsy and am a very active wheelchair user. I graduated from Milwaukee Area Technical College in Spring 2006 with an Associate Degree in the Visual Communications Program (Web Site Design & Computer Graphics). My dream job would be to work for a pro sports team in the website and/or graphics since I love working with computers and sports of any kind so much.

I have spoken at numerous state and national conferences about my transition experience. I currently sit on the Kids As Self Advocates (KASA) National Youth Advisory Board. For more information about KASA check out our web site www.fvkasa.org. I also sit on the Wisconsin State Transition Initiative Youth Leadership Council.

In my free time, if I have any, I enjoy attending sporting events, (cheering for the real America's team the Green Bay Packers!), working with computers and hanging out with friends. I have recently started two web site design business. I started CT Digital with a friend, and All-Star Design Studio by myself. To get more information on CT Digital or All-Star Design Studio go to www.ctdigitalwi.com or www.chadmp.com. I currently live on my own in an assisted living apartment.
